Fair grooming software comparison
OpenDog vs Square Appointments: test the route, pet record, and checkout.
Square Appointments pairs flexible time-slot booking with one of the strongest payment and commerce ecosystems in this comparison set. OpenDog is narrower and built around a mobile groomer’s request, route decision, dog record, field stop, invoice, and next visit. Make both products prove the same route day—not just an open calendar and a successful card sale.
- Square details checked September 2026
- Same route and phones in both demos
- Include subscription and processing
OpenDog owner proof
Reconcile the grooming work—not only the card total.
Ask each system to explain appointments, pets serviced, service rows, invoices, recorded payments, deposits, tips, balances, staff activity, unfinished work, and exports without mixing one total into another.
Current OpenDog proof
Use these OpenDog screens in the same test you give Square.
These views use sample grooming data. Judge Square Appointments from its current account, demo, and official materials—not from a competitor’s recreation of its product.
Review a request before scheduling
OpenDog keeps the client, dog, service, address, timing preference, and notes unconfirmed until the business decides what fits.
Open the complete mobile stop
The dog, service, address, route fit, deposit, care notes, and suggested next visit stay together in the appointment.
Read the dog record before arrival
OpenDog keeps factual owner context, handling notes, breed details, and repeat-care information close to the visit.
The honest short version.
Square Appointments is the stronger general booking, checkout, payment, commerce, and add-on ecosystem. Its current materials cover online booking, unlimited staff calendars, reminders, confirmations, waitlists, prepayments, no-show policies, invoices, cards, digital wallets, customer profiles, messages, staff tools, marketing, loyalty, payroll connections, and reporting. OpenDog is the more purpose-built mobile-grooming workflow, especially when address, route fit, van context, dog-specific care, and the next visit must stay together.
- Consider Square when its booking, point of sale, payment methods, customer communications, staff tools, marketing, loyalty, hardware, banking, or payroll ecosystem can replace several tools you already use.
- Consider OpenDog when the business needs pet-specific records and an owner-reviewed route workflow more than a broad commerce platform.
- Neither feature count nor a free subscription settles the decision. Run the same hard grooming day and calculate the complete cost.
Use Square’s current plans—not an older Appointments price chart.
Square’s current United States pricing page presents Appointments inside Square Free, Square Plus, and Square Premium. Free is $0 per location; Plus is $49 per month per location; Premium is $149 per month per location. Plus and Premium offer a 30-day trial and can be cancelled or switched. Square also says unlimited staff calendars have no employee limit, but advanced booking, communication, staff, marketing, reporting, and support capabilities vary by plan.
- Confirm the exact plan, number of locations, billing date, Appointments capabilities, staff permissions, and every add-on in writing.
- Free has no monthly subscription charge, but payment processing still applies when the business takes a payment.
- Square lists Payroll separately from $35 monthly plus $6 per person paid and hardware separately from $59; marketing, loyalty, gift cards, instant transfers, and other services can add cost.
- OpenDog lists Solo at $49 for up to 125 completed appointments, Team at $99 for up to 500, and Business at $149 for up to 1,500; vehicles do not affect the plan and its 14-day trial requires no card.
Test the road separately from the time-slot calendar.
Square’s current Appointments pages emphasize availability, staff calendars, locations, services, booking limits, resources, Google Calendar, and avoiding double-bookings. The reviewed materials do not describe a mobile-grooming route engine that orders stops by geography, evaluates a service area, assigns vans, or presents saved and suggested route orders. An integration may extend Square, but buyers should require the actual route workflow they would operate.
- Build eight stops with a fixed window, multi-pet household, distant request, lunch, cancellation, van change, late groom, and urgent added stop.
- Watch where client addresses appear, whether travel time blocks availability, how stop order is chosen, who approves a change, and what the groomer sees next.
- If Square needs a map, mileage, routing, ETA, or field-service integration, test the full handoff and include its subscription, support, duplicate-entry, privacy, and failure risks.
- Treat maps, traffic, route suggestions, and arrival estimates as planning help—not guarantees of the fastest or safest route or an exact arrival.
Prove request control before the route is committed.
Square supports a branded booking site, embedded booking, Book Now links, client-selected services and staff, appointment requests, confirmations, rescheduling, cancellation settings, daily booking limits, and paid-tier waitlists. OpenDog keeps a submitted request unconfirmed until the owner reviews the client, dog, service, address, timing preference, notes, and route fit. Configure the exact Square rule you intend to use and test every exception.
- Try a new client, repeat dog, two-dog household, unavailable time, distant address, missing detail, daily limit, waitlist opening, and service needing clarification.
- Confirm whether bookings are automatic or require accept or decline, when a pending request can be cancelled, and which message the client receives at every stage.
- Test duration, price, staff member, location, resource, travel gap, deposit, no-show rule, change, refund, and client self-service.
- Read the booking, confirmation, reschedule, cancellation, and waitlist experience on the client’s phone as well as the staff device.
A customer profile is not automatically a pet record.
Square publishes customer profiles with contact details, preferences, birthdays, notes, documents, images, communication history, appointment history, sales history, and payment information. Those are useful building blocks, but the reviewed Appointments materials do not present a dedicated multi-pet grooming record. Make Square demonstrate how one household with multiple dogs keeps each animal’s identity, safety, vaccination, styling, service, price, photo, and visit history separate.
- Create two people in one household and two dogs with different coat, handling, vaccination, price, and rebooking details.
- Open the next appointment from a phone and find the correct dog’s alert without searching a long household note.
- Change one dog’s instructions and confirm the other pet and prior visit history remain accurate.
- Export the records and verify that household, pet, appointment, document, image, and money relationships remain understandable outside the product.
Square has stronger live communications today.
Square currently publishes automated email and text reminders, text and email confirmations, customized notifications, client replies through Square Assistant, and Square Messages for service conversations and communication history. Higher plans add broader messaging features, and Square separates transactional appointment notices from promotional marketing texts. OpenDog’s confirmation and reminder emails are live; SMS, two-way texting, and automatic ETA texts are Coming Soon.
- Send a confirmation, reminder, reply, schedule change, cancellation, route-delay note, payment request, receipt, follow-up, and rebooking message.
- Confirm plan requirements, notification preferences, consent, quiet hours, sending identity, dedicated-number limitations, reply routing, delivery status, history, attachments, and export.
- Do not count promotional text allowances as proof that every operational message is included; ask Square to classify normal monthly volume.
- Buyers who require live texting now should treat Square’s current capability as a meaningful advantage.
Price processing with the actual payment mix.
Square is unusually capable at checkout: current materials cover in-person and online cards, Tap to Pay, digital wallets, cards on file, invoices, ACH through invoices, gift cards, Cash App Pay, Afterpay, cash, checks, discounts, refunds, prepayments, deposits, no-show fees, free next-business-day transfers, and paid same-day or instant transfers. That breadth is valuable, but the software fee is only part of total cost.
- As checked September 8, 2026, Square lists in-person rates of 2.6% + 15¢ on Free, 2.5% + 15¢ on Plus, and 2.4% + 15¢ on Premium; online rates are 3.3% + 30¢ on Free and 2.9% + 30¢ on Plus and Premium.
- Manual entry or card on file is listed at 3.5% + 15¢ on all three plans. Afterpay is 6% + 30¢. ACH invoice, international-card, instant-transfer, gift-card, hardware, and other fees have separate rules.
- Model 100 real tickets by channel and include refunds, disputes, stored-card use, deposits, tips, no-shows, failed payments, payout timing, hardware, and support.
- OpenDog supports appointment-linked invoices, deposits, tips, balances, recorded payment status, and supported Stripe card payments after setup; it does not replace payroll or accounting.
Check no-show protection and prepaid changes carefully.
Square’s paid Appointments tiers support full prepayment or a card hold for no-show protection. Square says a held card applies to one appointment unless the client separately saves it, cancellation charges can be applied for up to 14 days, and prepaid changes can require manual refund work. OpenDog records deposits and balances under an explicit shop policy; it does not make the business’s cancellation decision.
- Run no requirement, full prepayment, card hold, late cancellation, no-show, accepted request, declined request, reschedule, price change, partial refund, and declined-card cases.
- Check exactly when the client may cancel or reschedule online and what changes after a request is accepted.
- Confirm fee type, enforcement window, consent language, receipt, dispute ownership, refund path, accounting treatment, and staff permissions.
- Keep policy decisions, customer communication, processor events, and the appointment’s recorded balance distinct.
Make setup, data transfer, staff access, and exit specific.
Square supports customer import by CSV and a large ecosystem of staff, payroll, marketing, loyalty, banking, hardware, and marketplace products. A customer CSV is not proof that pet relationships, grooming alerts, future bookings, stored payment permissions, messages, or complete history will move cleanly. OpenDog provides self-serve setup with support and source-dependent import review. Both need a written launch and exit plan.
- Inventory households, pets, photos, notes, vaccinations, services, prices, staff, locations, resources, routes, recurring and future appointments, forms, contracts, invoices, balances, tips, messages, gift cards, loyalty, payroll context, and history.
- Import a representative sample and verify counts, household and pet separation, dates, duplicates, special characters, long notes, documents, money totals, permissions, and future appointments.
- Test owner, manager, office, and groomer access on real devices, then verify employee separation, audit history, weak connections, offline-payment limits, and recovery.
- Confirm cleanup ownership, excluded data, training, support hours, cutover, cancellation, export formats, app access, payment records, and hardware after leaving.
Run the same finish-line test in both products.
Use one sample household, two dogs, a new request, route exception, staff handoff, client reply, no-show rule, invoice, payment problem, owner report, and next-visit decision. Add marketing, loyalty, payroll, hardware, or banking only when the business will actually use them. Score what the team completes and understands.
- Request, approval rule, service, duration, price, deposit, and final appointment
- Address, service area, travel gap, route order, van, directions, and groomer view
- Household, separate dog records, handling alert, vaccination, photos, notes, documents, and history
- Confirmation, reminder, reply, route-delay message, promotional text, receipt, and communication cost
- Invoice, card, cash, tip, refund, no-show fee, balance, processor fee, payout, payroll handoff, and report

FAQ
Common questions from grooming businesses.
Is Square Appointments built specifically for dog groomers?
No. Square Appointments is a general appointment, customer, payment, and commerce platform used across many service businesses. It can schedule grooming appointments, but a groomer should specifically test pet records, multi-pet households, handling and vaccination details, route decisions, travel time, vans, and field context.
Does Square Appointments have a free plan?
Yes. As checked September 8, 2026, Square Free is $0 per location with payment processing charged when payments are taken. Square Plus is $49 monthly per location and Square Premium is $149 monthly per location. Capabilities and processing rates differ, so compare the exact plan and add-ons you would use.
Does Square Appointments include route optimization?
Square’s reviewed Appointments materials describe time-slot, staff, service, location, resource, and availability scheduling but do not describe a mobile-grooming route engine. Ask Square or an integration provider to demonstrate address handling, travel gaps, geographic ordering, service areas, vans, approvals, and the live field view before relying on it for routes.
Which product has stronger messaging today?
Square currently publishes email and text reminders, confirmations, customized appointment notifications, Square Assistant replies, and Square Messages. OpenDog’s confirmation and reminder emails are live, while SMS, two-way texting, and automatic ETA texts are Coming Soon. Buyers who require live texting now should treat this as a meaningful Square advantage.
Can I move from Square Appointments to OpenDog?
A switch may be possible, but Square’s customer CSV support does not by itself prove that pet relationships, grooming notes, photos, vaccinations, future bookings, invoices, messages, or history will transfer. Inventory the data, test a representative sample, compare totals and relationships, and protect the live schedule before changing systems.
What is the fairest final test?
Run the same normal grooming day in both products on desktop and phone. Include a request, two-dog household, distant stop, route change, handling alert, staff handoff, client reply, no-show case, invoice, payment edge, owner report, export, and next-visit decision. Then compare subscription, processing, add-ons, hardware, integrations, and staff time.
Make the calendar, route, dogs, and checkout survive one real day.
Use sample data, actual team phones, the exact Square plan, real payment channels, and one difficult route and multi-pet scenario before choosing. OpenDog starts with a 14-day trial and no card at signup.
